What a House Reading Is (and What It Isn't)

People are often a little nervous when they first ask me about a House Reading. They are not sure what it is. Some imagine I will arrive with a pendulum and a bundle of sage. Others fear I will march through the house pointing at their curtains and telling them everything is wrong.

Neither is true, though I am not above a bundle of sage in the right circumstances. So I thought it might help to explain, plainly, what a House Reading is, and what it is not.

What it is

A House Reading is an archetypal reading of the place you live. Its surroundings, its rooms, its patterns, and its relationship with you.

I walk through the house with you, slowly, from the street to the attic. We look at where the energy gathers and where it drains away. Where the house welcomes you, and where it resists. Which rooms are loved, which are used, and which are merely endured. We notice the patterns of depletion and of possibility.

And then, most importantly, we look at how all of this relates to you. Your own personal architecture. The season of life you are in. What you need, and where you may have become disconnected from it.

A House Reading is not about your house. It is about the conversation between you and your house.

What it is not

It is not interior design

I will not choose your paint colours or tell you where to buy a sofa. Sometimes a reading does lead to physical changes, a room repurposed, a piece of furniture moved or released. But the changes come from understanding, not from a mood board.

It is not decluttering

I have never once asked anyone to throw anything away. Clutter is information, like everything else in a house. Sometimes it needs to go. Sometimes it needs to be understood first. Often both.

It is not a judgement

There is no such thing as a wrong house, or a messy one, or one that is not good enough. There are only houses that are telling you something. My job is to help you hear it.

It is not fortune telling

I cannot predict the future of your house or your life. What I can do is help you see the present more clearly, which in my experience is far more useful.

How it works

Readings happen either in person, on location, or online by video, which works surprisingly well. You carry the camera and I follow along, asking questions and noticing what you might not.

Before we begin, we talk. About you, the house, how long you have lived there, and what made you get in touch. Sometimes there is a specific question: a room that does not work, a sense of being stuck, a decision about whether to stay or rehome. Sometimes there is only a feeling that something is not quite right.

Then we walk. We start outside, because the threshold always knows first. We move through every room, including the ones you would rather I did not see. Those are usually the ones that matter most.

Afterwards, we sit down together and I share what I have noticed. What the house seems to be saying, which archetypal patterns are present, where the friction lies, and some gentle, practical suggestions for working with it. You will receive a written summary afterwards, so you do not have to remember everything.

What people usually feel

Recognition, most often. A sense of yes, that is exactly it, even when what I have said is something they have never put into words before. Relief, sometimes, at being told that the thing they felt so ashamed of is not a failing at all, but a signal.

Occasionally tears. Nearly always laughter, at some point. Houses are funny, and so are we.

And the tea

Yes, there is tea. Lavender, if you have it, or I will bring some. And if the reading happens to finish at a certain hour of the afternoon, I have been known to accept a glass of prosecco. It seems only polite.
